The Sunset Coast Tour

If there was one defining feature of Western Australia it would without a doubt be the coastline. Here in WA local life revolves around the water, and the beaches here are unlike anything you will find in the rest of Australia. The vibrant blue Indian ocean comes up to meet the white powdery beaches that line the coast along with some stunning red coastal cliffs scattered throughout, all while the green pristine hinterland peaks its head out in the distance.

The city of Perth is no exception to Western Australia’s famed beaches. Here you will find a gorgeous stretch of coast called the Sunset Coast. The Sunset Coast spans nearly the entirety of the metropolitan coastline and is a great option of exploring some of the best spots around Perth. Here you will find bustling beachside cafes, swimming and snorkeling beaches, surf beaches, esplanades complete with beach front shopping, as well as countless restaurants and bars to keep you nourished from dawn until dusk.

Now once you decide to embark on the quintessential Perth road trip keep in mind that you will have some tough decisions ahead of you such as which café is best for morning coffee and not to mention which marina view restaurant has the tastiest lunch. We will try our best to guide you along the way but sometimes the best places are the ones you aren't looking for.

The day of coastal wandering will begin in North Fremantle with two things you can never do without on a day full of adventuring, coffee and brekkie. Try out the mouthwatering menu at Bib & Tucker that features local produce as well as Indian Ocean views. Once you are properly stuffed and caffeinated it is time to head north to Cottesloe beach.

Sunset Coast tour

Cottesloe beach is one of the most famous beaches in Perth and the perfect spot for a morning dip in the calm crystal blue waters. Here you will also find seaside cafes and the famous Cottesloe Beach Hotel which is known for its iconic Sunday sessions. Next up on the coastal tour is a cheeky little stop at City Beach. Just inland from the beach you will find the Reabold Hill Lookout which offers stunning coastal views from the highest natural point along the coast.

From there you will wind your way up to Scarborough Beach, the perfect place to stop for another swim, morning tea, or another coffee at one of the many hip cafes and eateries. Scarborough beach is also a great place to get the surfboard out and paddle for a few waves (or just chill on the beach and watch the pros). If the waves at this beach aren't to your liking do not fear just a tad bit further up the coast is the most famous Perth City beach break. Trigg beach is known for its waves and is a great spot to hop in the water with your board.

Next up on the coastal adventure we have a little spot called Mettam’s Pool. This spot is perfect for little swimmers and budding snorkelers. Right off the beach you will find tons of little rock pools and tiny reefs to explore. The area is also great for swimming due to the protection it gets from the outer reef making the water more calm and less choppy.

Once you have warmed up your snorkeling appetite at Mettam’s Pool it is time to head to Marmion Marine Park for some spectacular diving and snorkeling. This shallow reef system can be seen by simply swimming just off the shore and it stretches all the way to Burns Beach. Enjoy the shallow crystal lagoons where dolphins are often caught playing and if you are lucky you might even spot a sea lion lazing about.

Now that you have worked up a proper appetite it is time to hit the main attraction of the Sunset Coast, Hillary’s Marina. This family friendly locale is bursting at the seams with restaurants, shops, and activities to keep kids of all ages entertained for hours. Enjoy lunch and a cold beverage while looking out over the marina, go for a swim in the harbor, or learn more about the marine life you have been admiring at the Aquarium of Western Australia, where you can even snorkel or dive with sharks.

Last stop on the Sunset Coast tour is the Mindarie Marina. This is Australia’s largest man made marina and it is the perfect place to end your coastal tour while sipping a tasty cold beverage and watching the sky come to life as the golden sun slips under the surface of the horizon. So grab your hat and sunnies, hop in your car and let the shores of the Indian Ocean take you on a tour of Perth’s favorite places. Enjoy strolls on the white sand beaches, visit fishy friends under the water and fully indulge in the countless beachside cafes.
