A Perth favourite destination for a quick getaway. Just a short 2.5 hour drive north of Perth you can saunter along the Indian Ocean Drive and take in all the scenic views as you cruise up the coast to this beloved destination. Perfect for a family getaway, a romantic escape, or a stop-in while cruising further north along the coral coast, but hands down a place that should not be missed. From swimming with endangered species, jumping out of airplanes, to cruising around town and relaxing on the beach there is no shortage of activities here that will please everyone.
For the water enthusiasts in the group, they will be dazzled by the colorful offshore reefs and amazing marine life encounters. A small string of islands gives shelter to the bay and creates an amazing underwater spectacle. From gorgeous coral gardens to underwater caves waiting to be explored you won’t be disappointed. However our favorite water activity in the area is hands down a visit to the protected Jurien Bay Marine Park. This is where you can have a chance to meet the endangered Australian Sea Lion. Be sure to book a tour so you can safely enjoy a swim with these little puppy dogs of the sea.
Our second favorite part of Jurien Bay would have to be Sandy Cape. A small camping area and recreation park just 10 kilometers north of Sandy bay. This little oasis is on an unsealed road but accessible for 2WD. However if you do have 4WD you can enjoy some stunning driving tracks in the area as well. This small white sandy beach sits in a sheltered bay and is perfect for beachside camping, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, SUPing, sandboarding and relaxing. Campsites are first come first serve so get in early and pick out the best beachside site. There are minimal amenities here so be sure to bring lots of drinking water.
If you are looking for things to do in town there is plenty. For the fishing enthusiasts of the group, be sure to check out the jetty on the main stretch of beach, it is the perfect spot to stop and cast out a line and if you are lucky you might even catch dinner. However if it isn’t your lucky day don’t fret, head on down to the Murray St Grill for a fab fresh cooked meal that you won’t soon forget. If it is adrenalin you are seeking during your stay in the bay then you must consider booking in for a skydive. You will witness stunning views from above and get to touchdown on the white sandy shores for an epic finale to an unforgettable experience.
For the nature lovers in the group consider coming between the months of August and September when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The whole area becomes quickly transformed into a carpet of colour with over 900 stunning varieties of flora. For the full show head up to Lesueur National Park which is so stunning it was actually ranked as one of the top spots for wildflowers in the world. If you happen to be visiting from June to December then some whale watching will definitely be in order. These majestic giants will be on their annual migration to and from Antarctica to seek the warm waters of the North for breeding and birthing of new calves. Lastly be sure to check out one of WA’s most famous landscapes at Nambung National Park. Here you will find the otherworldly landscape of the Pinnacles with huge limestone pillars by the thousands nestled in the yellow sand desert that will have you feeling like you are on another planet. For some stunning colors try to visit around sunrise or sunset.
So the next time you are planning a short little getaway from Perth be sure to consider Jurien bay. This relaxed little fishing town is jam packed with adventures and activities suited to everyone. Also the weather here is temperate all year round so pack your bags and hop in the car because fun times are just down the road.
